How competitive is a general surgery residency?

I want to be a trauma surgeon. I heard that I must graduate med school and get into a general surgery residency program and then do a fellowship in surgical critical care. Is the fellowship in surgical critical care very competitive? Most people say that the lifestyle of trauma surgeons are hard and that they have little time for family. Is this true? If you are a surgeon answering this question, do you find trauma cases enjoyable because of the fact that you have to think on your toes and make life/death decisions?
